Xi's Culture Stories: Exploring The Liangzhu Archaeological Ruins

The year 2024 marks the fifth anniversary of the successful inscription of the Archeological Ruins of Liangzhu City on the World Heritage List. In July 2019, the Archeological Ruins of Liangzhu City were successfully included in the World Cultural Heritage List, marking that the over 5,000-year history of Chinese civilization has been widely recognized by the international community.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, has always attached great importance to the protection of the Liangzhu site and its application for a World Heritage status. In July 2003, Xi, then secretary of the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee, inspected the Liangzhu site, calling it “a holy land demonstrating of the 5,000-year history of Chinese civilization.”
In 2016, four archaeologists wrote to Xi to express their hope that the Liangzhu site would be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List at the earliest possible date. Xi made an instruction, once again stressing the importance of the effective protection of ancient ruins, highlighting their role in deepening understanding of the long history and value of the Chinese civilization.
On June 15, 2023, the flame of the Hangzhou Asian Games was successfully collected at the Archeological Ruins of Liangzhu City. This indicated that in the place where Chinese civilization dawned, the flame of sportsmanship, civilization and peace symbolizing the great unity of Asia was ignited, better showing the Asian people the ancient history of Chinese civilization and the good wishes of the Chinese people.
Civilizations is like water, nurturing everything silently. “The Chinese civilization has been open and inclusive, continuously enriching itself, and drawing on the essence of other civilizations, greatly enriching the garden of world civilizations.” Through telling the world the stories of its excellent traditional culture, China is working to promote in-depth exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese civilization and other civilizations in the world, constantly deepening consensus on values and consolidating the cultural foundation for building a global community of shared future.
