Jingdezhen, a city born and flourishing because of porcelain, carries the civilizational codes refined by the kiln flame over a thousand years. It is a “living fossil” of Chinese ceramic culture and an important focal point for the practice of Xi Jinping Thought on Culture at the local level.

In October 2023, the National Conference on Publicity, Ideology and Cultural Work was held, at which the concept of Xi Jinping Thought on Culture was proposed for the first time. A few days later, President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chose Jingdezhen as the first stop of his inspection tour. During the visit, he noted that ceramics are a treasure of China and an important emblem of Chinese civilization, and urged that the name card of the “millennium-old porcelain capital” should be polished even brighter.

Taoyangli Historical and Cultural Block is located in the heart of Jingdezhen’s old town and serves as a tangible symbol of the cultural legacy of this millennium-old porcelain capital. However, its protection had once faced challenges due to the industrialization of ceramics. In recent years, the local government has embraced the philosophy of “protecting historical and cultural heritage as if cherishing our own lives.” Through integrated and systematic preservation efforts and the renovation of the old town, the old kiln sites and traditional alleyways have been revitalized while the urban fabric is maintained, achieving a healthy interaction between cultural preservation and tourism development.

The Imperial Kiln Factory was a manufacturing facility that produced porcelain exclusively for the royal court during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. The site of the Imperial Kiln Factory still preserves Ming and Qing kiln stoves, surrounding walls, workshop ruins, and kiln debris, from which nearly 10 million porcelain fragments have been unearthed. Over 90% of the ceramic relics in the collection of the Palace Museum originated here. In 2018, the Regulations on the Protection and Management of the Imperial Kiln Factory Site in Jingdezhen was implemented, pioneering a multi-level protection mechanism. In addition, China Construction First Group Corporation Ltd. has carried out “micro-renovations” based on the concept of “restoring the old as the old,” allowing the bricks and tiles of the buildings to retain their historical look.

Today, the Xu’s Kiln, which can be traced back to the end of the Ming Dynasty, has been reignited, producing over 6,000 pieces of porcelain in traditional techniques. Endless streams of visitors have swarmed here to admire the ancient kiln, experiencing the rebirth of traditional craftsmanship. The practice in Jingdezhen proves that protecting historical relics requires reverence for their roots, and when preservation and utilization complement each other, cultural heritage can remain vibrant through the ages.
