The history of the New Fourth Army fully proved that the people’s support can determine the direction of history, because this country is its people, and the people is the country. 

Yancheng, on the shore of the Yellow Sea, is a city of heroes engraved with the revolutionary spirit of the New Fourth Army. The New Fourth Army Memorial Hall, located in the center of Yancheng, tells the story of the arduous journey of the New Fourth Army in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. As the only memorial hall that showcases the history of the New Fourth Army in China, it was open to the public in 1986. The memorial hall houses more than 10,000 pieces of cultural relics and historical records related to the New Fourth Army. Those historical photos, documents, cultural relics and restored scenes in the exhibition halls give a full picture to the glorious history of the New Fourth Army. 

Yancheng is a city full of revolutionary memories – the New Fourth Army Memorial Hall, the Memorial Site for the Joining Forces between the Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army, the Site of the Fifth Branch of the Military and Political University of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Central China Luyi Martyrs Cemetery, the Former Residence of Qiao Guanhua… There are 128 towns and villages named after martyrs and 248 revolutionary sites in Yancheng, and more than 18,000 revolutionary martyrs are buried in this land. The martyrs are eternal monuments towering in the history of Yancheng and ever-bright beacons lighting up the way forward for the people of Yancheng.

History is eternal because it is remembered, and the spirit is immortal because it is inherited. The Yancheng people are born with the tenacious, and hardworking spirit and are willing to sacrifice their lives for their lofty ideals. The Iron Army Spirit forged by the officers and men of the New Fourth Army with their blood and lives has become a precious spiritual wealth for the people of Yancheng.
